Preventative Hygiene Program
Developed in our office with our own hygienists, our preventative hygiene program is an individualized approach to your care. In the same way that (some people need a haircut every 4 weeks rather than every 3 months, and some have a faster metabolism) six month hygiene appointments aren’t suitable for everyone. Our hygienists strive to find that healthy balance of homecare and professional hygiene for each individual patient. You may be surprised to learn that even a couple of weeks can make a dramatic difference in the amount buildup of tartar and bacteria in your mouth.
Veneers – We often describe veneers as similar to false nails, as they sit on top of your existing tooth and can restore a beautiful smile. We shape your existing teeth, leaving as much healthy enamel as possible, and bond on a custom designed porcelain shell that wraps around the front of your tooth, improving the shape, colour, length and overall youthfulness appearance. You still keep your natural tooth, we’ve just bonded a bit of porcelain to the front. We have our own lab, to create your new smile, who works exclusively with Dr. Tejani and Dr. Kassam. He will come to us to do custom shading with an artists’ eye. Takes two to three appointments, two weeks apart (depending on the number of teeth [4+] and whether we need models to show patient)
Crowns (A.K.A. caps) are recommended in cases where the tooth is so broken down that a filling or an onlay cannot fix it, or if there’s been root canal therapy completed. A crown can be made of porcelain or gold and will cover and support the entire exposed tooth. With custom shading and design, provided by our very own lab that works exclusively with Drs. Tejani and Kassam, we can give that crown a natural look. The procedure may require up to two appointments, one week apart.
An onlay is recommended when the decay has become too large to be restored with a filling or when the cusp of the tooth has broken off. It is like a cross between a filling and a crown in that it does not cover the entire tooth, just a part of it, but it is made of porcelain and much stronger than a normal filling.
Gum contouring is often used in conjunction with placing a crown or veneer. It involves shaping the gums to give a more balanced, aesthetically pleasing look. In the past, they used to use a scalpel to shape the gums. Now we use lasers. The advantages include: very little discomfort afterwards, very quick, next to no healing time required, instant sterilization of
the shaped area.
Implants replace missing teeth. It is the closest restoration to a natural tooth that dentists can do. Unlike a bridge, that makes use of the teeth on either side of the gap, implants stand alone. A titanium screw is placed into your jaw bone (like the root of a tooth) and allowed to heal and mesh with the bone around it. After a healing period of three to six months, a crown can be placed on it, replacing the gap with a natural looking tooth.
Bridges span and fill the gap left by missing teeth. The teeth on either side of the missing tooth are used for support of the false tooth. A tooth on both sides of the gap is shaped and an impression taken. Our lab will custom make a restoration for you.
The laser is a concentrated light used to evaporate the decay while the tooth is cooled with water. It allows us to fill cavities without drilling and often without freezing.
Often referred to in our office as “LAPT” (Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy). Rather than more invasive therapy, such as gum surgery, we can use a laser to eliminate disease causing bacteria from the pocket between the gum and tooth with no recovery time. The laser tip actually attracts the pigment in the diseased tissue so we can remove only the unhealthy tissue, leaving the healthy tissue untouched. In the hands of our skilled hygienists, the laser is a powerful tool to promote gum healing, pocket reduction, and a great stride toward overall health.
Protective Appliances - Balanced Nightguard
Our nightguards are made of a hard acrylic material that is molded to fit your individual mouth. We balance it in such a way that it stabilizes your bite, helps to relax your jaw muscles while you sleep, and protects your teeth from the devastating effects of grinding (bruxism).
